Life in Saugatuck
Saugatuck Michigan is located south of Holland Michigan and borders the town of Douglas. Situated on the mouth of the Kalamazoo River and due to its location on Lake Michigan, the real estate in Saugatuck is very popular. You'll find a mix of Lake Michigan homes, cottages, properties, other single family homes, residential condos, rental and investment property and even commercial opportunities.
While you get the opportunity to experience all four seasons in Saugatuck, you'd never suspect that it gets snow during the summer months. Constantly bustling with outdoor activities in the warm summer air, Saugatuck is often descirbed as bursting with summer energy even though it is a small town and also offers peace and quiet.
Saugatuck was orignally a lumber town and port, settled for its location on the mouth of the Kalamazoo River (which leads to Lake Michigan). Saugatuck, and whats known as it's "Twin city" Douglas, later were recognized as an art colony and tourist attraction in the Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th century. In the early 20th century visitors flocked to Saugatuck for what was commonly referred to as the "Big Pavilion". A famous dance hall and concert venue, the Big Pavilion continued to draw in visitors until the popular destination burnt down in 1960.
These days, Saugatuck draws in its visitors with great art galleries, the harbor and marina, incredible scenery, intereting boutiques, and Lake Michigan. While is Saugatuck, you can climb to the top of Mount Baldhead and view the surrounding area and Lake Michigan. You can then run down from the top to the ever popular Oval Beach (also located on Lake Michigan). Close by, you can access the Saugatuck State Dunes State park, Allegan State Game Area, and the city of Holland!
